Domestic Detour: Vegas Wins and Hoover Dam Wonders

Not all my travels require a passport. I took a short trip to Vegas over Thanksgiving—three nights, a few surprises, and a reminder that domestic travel can be just as rewarding

QUICK ESCAPE TO VEGAS

Took a quick trip to Vegas just before Thanksgiving as I had that week off. Just stayed 3 nights. Realized I hadn't been in about 10 years. So much has changed.

WHERE I STAYED

I stayed at the Palazzo, part of the Venetian property. Amazing room—it was huge with a separate seating area in a sunken living room. My view was of the Strip, which used to cost extra. Now the view everyone pays extra for is of the Sphere, which is just behind the property.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS

I didn’t wander around too much on the Strip but did take a day trip out to Hoover Dam and Boulder City. Went with a tour and got to go down into the generator room at the dam. Fascinating.

Also went to see a show in the Sphere. It was a virtual recorded concert of U2. Amazing technology—it looked like they were really down there on the stage. I’d love to attend a live concert there someday.

UNEXPECTED WINS

What really made my trip a hit was the fact that I kept winning at the slots. Essentially paid for the trip with my winnings. And I got upgraded on Alaska both directions!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Vegas, let’s not be strangers—we need to get together more often.
